Family medicine
Family Practice is a medical specialty that is committed to and provides continuing and comprehensive health care for individuals and their families.
Family doctors:
- Possess unique attitudes, skills and knowledge which qualify them to provide continuing, comprehensive health care and preventive services to each member of the family - regardless of sex, age or type of problem.
- Are trained in a wide variety of areas including internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics, gynecology and surgery.
- Can handle the vast majority of outpatient medical problems. However, some problems will require referral to an appropriate specialist.
- Are best qualified to serve as each patient’s advocate in all health-related matters, including the appropriate use of specialists, health services and community resources.
